Birch (Sweet) Essential Oil

Extraction Method: Steam distilled from wood.

Key Constituent: Methyl Salicylate [90+%]

Action: Birch (Sweet) is analgesic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, a liver stimulant, and it supports bone function.

Traditional Uses: The American Indians and early European settlers flavored their tea with birch bark. Birch's main constituent, methyl salicylate, is also found in willow trees and is similar to the salicylic acid used in aspirin.

Indications: Arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, muscular pain, tendonitis, hypertension, and cramps. Birch and wintergreen essential oil contain an active principle similar to cortisone that is beneficial for bone, muscle, and joint discomfort.

Other Uses: Birch essential oil may be helpful for cystitis, acne, bladder infection, gout, gallstones, edema, eczema, skin diseases, ulcers, and urinary tract disorders.

Application: Birch is safest to apply after diluting with a massage oil or vegetable oil. It also may be applied neat (undiluted) to the bottom of the feet. For baths, add 3-5 drops to bath water with 1/2 oz. of a bath or shower gel.

Fragrant Influence: Birch stimulates and increases awareness in all levels of the sensory system.

Safety Data: If pregnant or under a doctor's care, consult your physician. Do not use if epileptic. Skin test for allergies.

Companion Oils: Wintergreen, basil, cypress, geranium, juniper, lavender, lemongrass, marjoram, peppermint, and Roman chamomile.
